New York supreme court rules against same-sex marriage.
A sad ruling and one which goes against both logic and a straightforward view of what the state laws actually say, but strategically, this proves again that individual states' courts (and legislators) are perfectly capable of regulating marriage in their own jurisdictions without the need for the federal government to get involved. Massachusetts decided one way, New York another way, and that is how our system works.
The right thing now is for the legislators of New York State to represent the views of their constituents, which are relatively liberal, and pass a comprehensive civil unions law or something similar. And as always, for the federal government, and Congress, to leave this issue alone.
