The storm of his eye
Well, the storms are well east of the region now and it looks like there's no more severe weather threat for Lawrence out of this storm system. After this morning's storm, we had two other rounds, all of which thankfully managed to dodge the city. Ironically, with all the damage and lightning and wind, we ended up with almost no rain, which is the one thing we actually need (well, the plants do, at least -- we are in a bit of a drought here).
The weather service said there were no confirmed tornadoes, and what caused all the damage was a wide-scale microburst; they estimated the straight-line winds of 70-90 miles per hour...so I guess instead of a tornado, we had a hurricane!
We got a good look around town today, and it looks like most of the damage was things like large trees uprooted, roofs stripped of shingles or punctured by trees, signs and awnings torn away, broken windows, and lots of small debris and garbage everywhere. Most of the city got power back by late afternoon, although there are still large pockets without power.
And it looks like we made the front page of CNN...
They even cancelled classes at the university tomorrow which they almost never do, even when we have a big snowstorm. All the better for KU students who want to celebrate the Jayhawks' Big 12 championship!
